We spent 2 days in the capital before going on our trek and an extra 3 days after our return. Kathmandu is a weird hippy hub with a medley of culture, art, food and people. It's strangely hip but at the same time chaotic. We were able to see a few iconic spots - mostly temples - by walking the city. We also saw dead people... they were being cremated. What a weird experience! I would come back in a heartbeat: everyone was so friendly and welcoming.

We are back from the Everest Base camp trek and what a whirlwind of emotions! First, it is an accomplishment to just make it to Lukla (where you begin the hike). Flights always get canceled due to bad weather and the airport is total chaos. We ended up making friends and splitting a helicopter. From Lukla you don't have any time to waste and begin hiking right away. I could go on and on about the views - it is so incredibly beautiful, so serene and peaceful and you start to wonder why you didn't come here earlier. The days are very similar: you brace the cold and get out of your warm sleeping bag, put on the same outfit you were wearing the day before, grab some breakfast and start walking by 8AM. You will be out of breath by step 5, almost get run over by yaks, say Namaste to all the porters and take 1,000 breaks before you make it to the next town. We met so many incredible people along the way, had so many laughs, a few falls, scary bridges, an encounter with a yak, a really bad cough, but most of all we had the best time!
We've cleared our 1 bedroom apartment in SF, drove everything down to Orange County and now are spending time with family before our big departure. Feelings are mixed: excited, scared, happy, nervous, surreal but overall cannot wait!
We will be heading out to Kathmandu, Nepal on October 11th. Staying at a hotel for 2 nights and hopefully getting a flight to Lukla to begin our hike to base camp Everest. Wish us luck! |
